| Are
you due a tax rebate? |
There could be a variety of reasons
why you have overpaid tax and be due a tax rebate.
It's costs nothing to check yourself
with the Inland Revenue and you can claim for any year in the last
6. Each year over 300 million pounds goes unclaimed in overpaid
tax so apply for one today.
How
do I calculate if I am due a tax rebate?
You
will need to know how much you have paid in tax and how much you
have earned in the tax year. You can get this information from your
P45 or P60. If you have lost or were not given a P45 or P60 you
can ask your employer to provide a statement of earnings on headed
paper which is a sufficient replacement for these documents.
Once
you know how much you have paid in tax and how much you have earned
you can use a tax rebate calculator to see if you are due a refund.
Anyone that has earned
below the tax free allowance, which this year stands at 6475 pounds
will be able to claim a tax rebate if they have paid any income
tax at all.
How do I apply for a tax rebate?
You can apply
for a tax rebate for any previous tax years or the current tax year
if you are leaving the UK. If you are applying for a tax rebate
for the current tax year because for example you are on an emergency
tax code, you will need to wait until the end of the tax year on
5th April.
To apply for
a tax rebate for a previous tax year you will need as much information
as you can to avoid any delays with the Inland Revenue.
You should send:
- A cover letter
asking for a tax rebate
- All of your
P45/P60/statement of earnings
- A P91 form
- work history.
- A P85/P86
if you are leaving or have left the UK or are not from the UK.
Once you have completed
all these forms, send them to your local tax office. Your rebate
should be sent to you within 8 weeks if the Inland Revenue has all
the information they require, if not they may contact you for further
information.
